It is one of the most important archaeological areas in the world, that prospered to be during the antiquity the most luminous, the most important intellectual, religious and athletic centre of the ancient world, which was selected to host the ceremony of the Olympic Games.

The Olympic Games in the antiquity had religious and ritual character and were taken place to honor Jupiter, the father of gods of Olympus (Holy Olympia was dedicated in the Olympic Jupiter and was named Altis, which means grove). The Games were organized for the first time at 776 B.C. As the years passed and the performance of Olympic Games acquired bigger and bigger prestige, the athletes and cities that participated were increased. Thus, a new need was created, to form a good organization and proportional infrastructures that would host so many people. In charge for the organization and the performance of Olympic Games was the city of Ancient Ilidas, for which it was big honor but also force to host in her region such an important event.

Walking in the Holy Area of Olympia we will be transported for a while in other ages. It is best for us to have a good guide, so that he can explain in detail what we see around us. Here we can found the Temple of Ira (Hera), in front of which we can found the altar where the “Touch of Olympic Flame” is made. The Temple of Jupiter is considered one of the most important buildings of Olympia and in his space was found the imposing gold and ivory statue of Jupiter, with 12 m. height, work of Phidias. This statue, after the suppression of Olympic Games, during 393 A.C. was transported in Istanbul and later was destroyed by fire.
The High School, the Ring, the Laboratory of Phidias, the Iroon, the Leonideo, the Chamber of Deputies, the Stoa (Gallery) of Echo were found in this area as well.
Our walk is completed in the Stadium that the Games took place. A vaulted entrance, the Crypt, puts us in the stadium, which was created during the 5th century B.C. The Stadium that we can visit today is the third at line and is dated in the 5th century B.C. The ancient Stadium (Stadium I) was extended at length of the gallery of Treasures, simple, without normal downhill’s. In the dues of 6th century B.C. it is shifted to the east and is shaped downhill (Stadium II). In the middle of 5th century B.C. the stage shifts still to the east (Stadium III). The 4th century B.C. is built the Stoa (Gallery) of Echo, which separates henceforth finally the Stadium from Holy Sanctuary. It never acquired stone seats, only for few honored persons, as well as the stone platform of Ellanodikon.
We return in the central entrance and we pass opposite, in order to visit the Archaeological Museum of Olympia.
