On the star-shape chersonese or "Island" - the hill was surrounded by the sea. Nowadays with the embankment fills it is connected with the plain. There are findings of the three historical periods of Greece, the classic, the gothic, and the modern period. From findings of the German archeologist Vrente in 1927, it is said that in
the "Island" there were people in MediElladic, Geometric, and Mycenae period. On the top of the hill there is the Venetian Castle. It was build in 1256 A.C. from Prince Wulielm Billeardouin and named it Castle of Astros, (Castello della estella) because the chersonese looks like a star.
Astros is cited from the 2nd A.C. century. In this area there was an ancient town Thirea, one of the four towns of Kynourias from the seniority (Thirea, Anthini, Eva, Vrasies). In a distance of 3 km. away from Mesogeio Astros next to Eva Kynourias and to Doliana you can find the Villa of Herodes the Attic. Opposite of this Villa, there
is the monastery of Metamorphosis of Savior Christ, (12th century) build on the ruins of an ancient temple. In Mesogeio Astros there is the Archeological Museum with emarkable exhibitory from the excavation of Kynouria, Anthini, and the Villa of Herodes the Attic.
There is a continuous road connection from Astros to Athens with buses (duration 2 hours), From Astros to south, the road leads us to Agios Andreas, Tyros, Leonidio, while to north the road leads us to Argolida and Athens. Also the distance from Hitorical Nafplion is 30 km.
Close to Astros and next to the road to Agios Andreas, there is the hygrograph of Moustos, a beautiful lake which feeds from a source with brackish water. It is a rest station of emmigrant birds and entertain a big variety of birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, and a small number of Careta-Careta turtles. The lake is connected to the sea with two artificial channels. The hygrograph is placed among the Natura European Network as a protected area, and is offered for a quiet walk..
